Ask a longtime Avondale resident what October means and you'll get two very different answers depending on which end of the city they live on.
That is the argument of this post. Avondale's October is not one long festival season. It is a hinge between two weekends that pull the neighborhood in opposite directions, and residents who plan for one and skip the other lose the shape of the whole month.
The two-weekend hinge

The first weekend turns south Avondale outward. The second turns Old Town inward. If you only show up for the fireworks and the checkered flag, you miss the parade and the carnival that residents actually built for themselves. If you only show up for the parade, you miss what happens when a national broadcast points a camera at the city you live in.
Weekend one: the raceway turns outward
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series runs on Friday Oct 16, the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on Saturday Oct 17, and the Cup Series Freeway Insurance 500 on Sunday Oct 18. This is the playoff race, not the finale. The 2026 championship race moved to Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 8, which changes the tone of the fall weekend at Phoenix Raceway more than most residents realize. It is still a playoff cutoff race and still one of the largest single-day gatherings in the West Valley, but the "champion crowned in Avondale" storyline that dominated coverage from 2020 through 2025 is gone.
For a resident, the practical consequence is this: hotel demand and dining demand around 107th and McDowell are still strong that weekend, but the sense of a full week of national media is not. Sunday still commits you to the same traffic patterns. If you need to be at Sky Harbor before 2 p.m. on Oct 18, leave early.
Weekend two: Old Town turns inward
The following Thursday, the city pivots. Billy Moore Days runs October 22 through 25 at Festival Fields Park, 101 E Lower Buckeye Road. The carnival opens first. The parade is Saturday. The Billy Moore Days Parade steps off at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, staging on Old Town Avondale's Historic Western Avenue, and the route runs from Estrella High School, down Central to Western, Western to N 6th Street, then to Agua Fria High School.
Recreation Manager Mark Foote told the West Valley View last year that the parade "truly encompasses that celebration of all things Avondale and all things West Valley," which is the kind of quote city communications teams write. The more useful data point is buried further down in the same interview: 2025 was the second year at Festival Fields Park and the biggest year ever. The venue change worked. Attendance is trending up, not flat.
The best viewing is still along Western between Central and 1st Street, where the announcers set up.
If you have kids under 36 inches, the carnival wristband math changes. Unlimited-ride armbands are $17 online before Oct 25 at 5 p.m., $20 at the gate, valid one day within the posted wristband windows. The height rule is enforced, which catches families with toddlers off guard every year.
What actually shifts on the ground between the two
The temptation is to treat these as separate items on a calendar. They are not. They interact.
- Dining reservations near 107th and McDowell get scarce the Friday and Saturday of race weekend, then loosen for a few days, then tighten again around the parade.
- Old Town parking is normal on race weekend and gone by 8:15 a.m. on Oct 24.
- The Desert West Day Market at Estrella Mountain Community College runs through both weekends and is the one Saturday morning constant in the middle. The market operates every Saturday May through September with summer hours 8 a.m. to noon, and October usually holds the same window before the fall shift.
- Sky Harbor return traffic on Sunday Oct 18 is a race pattern. Sunday Oct 25 is a parade pattern. Different roads clog.
- Grocery runs at the Fry's on Dysart are noticeably heavier the Thursday before Billy Moore Days than the Thursday before the race, because race attendees eat at the track and parade families cook at home.
The new anchor that changes both weekends
The single largest change to Avondale's October calendar this year is not on the events page. It is the restaurant that opened in March.
Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurants opened its fifth Phoenix-area location on March 16, 2026, at 10525 W McDowell Rd. The dining room seats 245, the covered patio adds 48 more, and the space includes a Napa-style tasting room and retail wine market. That is a large building for that intersection, and it changed the reservation math for the neighborhood.
Before Cooper's Hawk, race-weekend Sunday dinner in Avondale meant either a long wait at one of the McDowell corridor chains or a drive east. Now there is a 293-seat option with a private dining room and a tasting room that absorbs walk-ins. The knock-on effect: reservations at smaller Old Town spots like the ones along Western Avenue are easier to hold on race Sunday than they were in 2024, because the volume tourists get funneled to the McDowell corridor. That is a genuine shift for residents who prefer Old Town but got squeezed out during race weekends in prior years.
The Saturday that ties the month together
Between the two weekends, the Saturday of Oct 17 is the one to build around. NASCAR is at the track, Billy Moore Days has not opened, and the Desert West Day Market on the Estrella Mountain Community College campus at 3000 N Dysart Rd runs 8 a.m. to noon with roughly 120 vendors, food trucks, live music, and lawn games.
That is the morning to do the market, then decide whether you want to be near the raceway for the truck-series race or genuinely away from it. It is also the last uncomplicated Saturday morning in the neighborhood until Nov 1.
One rule most residents forget until it is too late
Old Town Avondale is a small footprint. Western Avenue, the pedestrian-friendly core between Central Avenue and Dysart Road, is where the locally-owned restaurants and the historic buildings sit. On parade morning, the announcer stations sit at Central and Kinderman, at Western and 1st, and in front of the Sam Garcia library. If you set up between those points, you get commentary. If you set up outside them, you get floats without context.
The rule that catches people: the parade is not the only thing happening at Festival Fields Park that Saturday. Softball at Festival Fields Park runs in the morning starting around 8 a.m., then the carnival and festival open in the evening. Families who plan for a "parade morning, home for lunch, carnival at night" arc get the full day. Families who try to squeeze the carnival into the afternoon find the ride windows are shorter than expected.
The one-sentence version
Avondale in October is a hinge. The raceway weekend faces out toward the country, the Billy Moore weekend faces in toward the neighborhood, and the Saturday between them at the Desert West Day Market is the only morning that belongs to no one but the residents.
